First Time Renting a Caravan in India? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

First Time Renting a Caravan in India Here's Everything You Need to Know

You have seen the reels. The mountain views, the riverside mornings, the cosy interiors, the group laughing over chai cooked on a moving kitchen. And now you are seriously thinking about booking a caravan.

But you have never done it before. You have questions. What exactly is included? Can you actually drive it yourself? Where do you park overnight? What do you pack? What happens if something goes wrong on the road?

This guide answers every question a first-time caravan renter in India asks — so you can book with full confidence and focus on enjoying every kilometre.

What Exactly is a Caravan Rental in India?

A caravan rental in India is not like renting a car. It is renting a fully equipped home on wheels — a specially built vehicle that has a sleeping area, a kitchen, a washroom, air conditioning, entertainment, and storage, all moving with you as you travel.

Unlike caravan rentals in Western countries where you often self-drive, caravan rentals in India come with a professional driver included. This is actually a major advantage for first-timers. You do not need any special licence, you do not have to navigate unfamiliar mountain roads, and you can fully enjoy the journey from the comfort of the interior while your experienced driver handles everything outside.

Caravan IT’s luxury caravan, based out of Delhi NCR, accommodates up to 6 adults comfortably. It is fully equipped with cosy beds, a functional kitchen with fridge, microwave, and induction cooktop, a washroom with hot and cold water, cassette AC, Smart TV with OTT subscriptions, high-speed Wi-Fi, and a hard-shell rooftop tent for two additional guests.

How Do You Book a Caravan?

Booking is straightforward. You visit caravanit.in, select your travel dates, and choose between two pricing plans — per kilometre at Rs. 80 per km with a minimum of 250 km per day, or per day at Rs. 18,000 per day with 400 km included.

Share your planned destination and rough itinerary with the Caravan IT team. They will help you decide which pricing plan suits your trip better, suggest the best route, and advise on overnight parking spots along the way. A refundable deposit of Rs. 20,000 is collected at the time of booking to confirm your dates. The minimum rental period is 2 days.

Book at least 7 to 10 days in advance for regular dates, and at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance during peak season from October to March and on long weekends when demand is highest.

What is Included and What is Not?

Knowing this upfront saves confusion later.

Included in every Caravan IT rental: the caravan fully stocked with amenities, a professional driver, an All-India permit for interstate travel, basic kitchen supplies, bedding and linen, Wi-Fi, AC, entertainment, and 24/7 roadside support.

For the per kilometre plan, fuel, toll charges, and state taxes are also included. For the per day plan, fuel and tolls are charged separately.

Not included: your personal groceries and food, any campsite fees if you choose to park at a designated campsite, and generator usage charges if you need power at an off-grid location, which is charged at a nominal hourly rate.

5% GST applies on the total rental amount.

Where Do You Sleep Overnight?

This is one of the most common questions from first-timers, and the answer is simpler than most people expect.

The caravan is your accommodation. You sleep inside it, parked at a safe and suitable location. Your driver is experienced in identifying good overnight parking spots along your route — roadside dhabas with secure compounds, resort parking areas, petrol pump forecourts, and scenic spots where overnight parking is common and safe.

For certain popular destinations, Caravan IT’s team can advise on designated campsites that welcome caravan parking and offer basic facilities like electricity hookup and clean toilets nearby.

You do not need to book a hotel at any point during your trip unless you choose to combine hotel and caravan stays as part of a mixed itinerary.

What Should You Pack?

The caravan has a lot on board, so you do not need to overpack. Think light and practical.

Pack your personal clothing for the number of days you are travelling. Bring your toiletries since the washroom is stocked with basics but personal preference items like your own shampoo and soap are on you. Carry a first aid kit with any personal medications you need. Bring groceries and snacks for the road — this is where you save significantly compared to eating out every meal. The kitchen is fully equipped so you only need the ingredients.

For hill station or winter trips, pack warm layers. For beach or plains trips, keep it light. Comfortable footwear for exploring destinations is more useful than multiple outfit changes.

Leave behind anything you would not want to manage in a compact living space. The caravan has storage, but being thoughtful about luggage size makes the interior more comfortable for everyone.

What Are the Rules Inside the Caravan?

A few simple guidelines keep everyone comfortable and ensure the caravan stays in good condition for your trip.

Smoking is not permitted inside the caravan. Shoes are removed before entering the living area. The kitchen is available for use at any time when the caravan is parked — cooking while moving is not advised for safety reasons. Waste should be disposed of at designated points along the route — your driver will handle grey and black water tank management. Pets are welcome in Caravan IT’s caravan with prior notice at the time of booking.

Treat the caravan as you would your own home. Guests who do this consistently report the best experience.

What Happens if Something Goes Wrong?

Caravan IT provides 24/7 support throughout your trip. If there is a mechanical issue with the vehicle, the support team coordinates resolution — whether that means roadside assistance, a replacement arrangement, or guidance to the nearest service point.

Because you have a professional driver at all times, you are never in the situation of being stranded and having to handle a breakdown alone. This is one of the biggest practical advantages of the chauffeur-driven rental model in India compared to self-drive options abroad.

10 Tips for an Amazing First Caravan Trip

Plan a flexible itinerary. Have a destination in mind but leave room to linger at places you love and move on quickly from ones that do not excite you.

Start with a 2 to 3 day trip for your first rental. It gives you enough time to truly experience caravan travel without overwhelming first-timers with a very long journey.

Stock your kitchen before you leave. A quick supermarket stop on the way out of the city saves money and means you are ready to cook your first meal on the road without hunting for a shop.

Let your driver guide the route. The Caravan IT driver knows the roads, the stops, the best chai spots, and the safest overnight locations. Use that knowledge.

Wake up early on at least one morning. Watching the sunrise from inside the caravan or from the rooftop tent at a mountain or riverside location is one of those experiences that stays with you.

Keep your group to 6 or fewer for the best comfort. The caravan is designed for up to 6 adults and the experience is most enjoyable when the space is not overcrowded.

Charge your devices overnight. The caravan’s 15kW lithium battery powers all amenities when parked, so plug in at the end of each day and start every morning fully charged.

Book your next trip before you even get home. Almost everyone who does their first caravan trip starts planning the next one on the drive back. Availability fills up — lock in your dates early.

Share the experience on social media. Caravan trips photograph beautifully and generate genuine interest from your network. Your experience could inspire someone else’s first booking.

Finally — relax. The whole point of a caravan is that there is nothing to stress about. Your accommodation is with you. Your kitchen is with you. Your driver is with you. Just enjoy the road.
