Winter is also peak season for hill destinations, which means hotel prices spike and availability drops — a caravan sidesteps both.

1. Rishikesh & the Ganga Belt

Distance from Delhi: ~230 km | Drive time: ~5–6 hours

Winter mornings in Rishikesh come with mist over the Ganga and far fewer crowds than the peak monsoon rafting season. It’s an easy, low-altitude route — good for a first caravan trip or a shorter weekend getaway. Park by the riverside, wake up to the sound of the river, and explore the ashrams, cafes, and Beatles Ashram without the summer tourist rush.

Best for: First-timers, short 2–3 day trips, couples and families alike.

2. Shimla & Kufri

Distance from Delhi: ~340 km | Drive time: ~7–8 hours

Shimla in December and January often gets actual snowfall, and Kufri nearby is one of the more accessible snow-play spots in the region. 4. Nainital & Bhimtal

The Kumaon lakes region is quieter and greener than the more crowded Himachal routes, and winter brings clear mountain views of the snow-capped peaks in the distance without the summer crowds around the lake. Bhimtal, just next door, is a calmer alternative if Nainital itself feels touristy.

5. Mussoorie & Dhanaulti

Mussoorie gets busy in peak snow weeks, but Dhanaulti, about 24 km away, offers similar altitude and forest views with far fewer people. This route works well if you want the hill-station feel without fighting for a parking spot or a table at a cafe.

6. Chopta & Tungnath

Distance from Delhi: ~450 km | Drive time: ~9–10 hours

Known as “Mini Switzerland,” Chopta in winter is genuinely snow-covered and far less commercial than Himachal’s bigger hill stations. Roads can be tighter near the end, so this route suits travelers comfortable with a more adventurous drive. The reward is one of the most untouched winter landscapes accessible from Delhi.

What to Plan for on a Winter Caravan Trip

• Check road conditions before higher-altitude routes (Manali, Chopta) — snowfall can occasionally close roads temporarily; build a buffer day into your itinerary.
• Pack proper cold-weather layers even though the caravan cabin stays warm — you’ll still be outside at viewpoints and towns.
• Book earlier for peak weeks (Christmas–New Year, Republic Day weekend) since hill routes get busy regardless of how you’re traveling.
• Confirm your route’s altitude if anyone in your group has altitude sensitivity — Manali and Chopta go noticeably higher than Rishikesh or Nainital.
• Carry basic winter medication and a first-aid kit, standard for any hill trip in the season.
