20 Questions People Ask Before Renting a Caravan in India – Answered

Still on the fence about booking a caravan?

You are not alone. Most people who end up having the best road trip of their lives spent a week before booking asking exactly the questions below. This blog answers every single one of them — directly, honestly, and with the specific details you need to decide with confidence.

Let us get into it.

1. What exactly is a caravan rental in India?

A caravan rental in India is the hire of a fully equipped mobile home — a vehicle specially built to include a sleeping area, kitchen, washroom, air conditioning, entertainment, and storage. Unlike renting a car, you are renting a home that moves with you. Caravan IT’s luxury caravan is custom built and includes everything you need to live comfortably on the road for multiple days.

2. Do I need to drive it myself?

No. All caravan rentals in India, including Caravan IT’s, come with a professional driver. You do not need any special licence or experience. The driver handles all navigation, road management, and parking. You simply travel, relax, and enjoy the journey from the comfortable interior.

3. How much does it cost to rent a caravan in India?

Caravan IT offers two plans. The per kilometre plan is priced at Rs. 80 per km with a minimum of 250 km per day — this includes fuel, driver, toll, and state taxes. The per day plan is Rs. 18,000 per day with 400 km included and extra kilometres charged separately. A refundable security deposit of Rs. 20,000 is required, and 5% GST applies on the total amount.

4. What is the minimum rental period?

The minimum rental period with Caravan IT is 2 days. This is enough time for a proper weekend trip — for example, Delhi to Rishikesh and back, or Delhi to Neemrana with a leisure overnight stay.

5. What amenities are included inside the caravan?

Caravan IT’s luxury caravan includes cosy sleeping beds for up to 6 adults, a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, microwave, and induction cooktop, a washroom with hot and cold water and a geyser, cassette AC for stationary use and cabin AC when moving, Smart TV with all major OTT subscriptions, high-speed Wi-Fi, a 15kW lithium battery power system, and a hard-shell rooftop tent for 2 additional guests.

6. How many people can fit in the caravan?

The caravan comfortably accommodates up to 6 adults inside, with 2 more in the rooftop tent — making it ideal for groups of up to 8. For families with children, the space works very well for 2 adults and 3 to 4 children.

7. Can I cook inside the caravan?

Yes. The kitchen is fully functional and available whenever the caravan is parked. You can cook full meals using the induction cooktop, microwave, and fridge. Cooking while the caravan is moving is not advised for safety reasons. Many travellers stock up on groceries before the trip and cook most of their meals on board, saving significantly on food costs compared to eating at restaurants throughout the journey.

8. Where do we sleep at night?

Inside the caravan, parked at a safe and suitable location. Your driver is experienced in identifying good overnight stops — dhaba parking areas, resort premises, petrol pump forecourts, and scenic roadside spots where overnight parking is common and safe. You do not need to book a hotel at any point during your trip unless you choose to as part of a mixed itinerary.

9. Is there a washroom in the caravan?

Yes. The caravan has a full washroom with a shower, sink, toilet, 15-litre geyser for hot water, and a 400-litre fresh water tank. A grey water tank collects sink and shower waste, and a black water tank handles toilet waste — both managed by the driver at designated points. You never need to use a public washroom during your trip.

10. Can I use the AC when the caravan is parked?

Yes. The cassette AC runs on the caravan’s 15kW lithium battery when stationary, so you can sleep in full comfort even when the engine is off. The cabin AC operates when the vehicle is moving. A 3KVA Honda petrol generator is available for extended power needs at off-grid locations.

11. Does the caravan have Wi-Fi?

Yes. High-speed Wi-Fi is included in the caravan, keeping you connected throughout the journey. This is particularly useful for workation travellers, families who want to stream entertainment, or anyone who needs to stay in touch with work or family during the trip.

12. Can we bring our pets?

Yes. Caravan IT’s caravan is pet-friendly. You can bring your dog or other pets along with prior notice at the time of booking. This is one of the features families and pet owners love most — no scrambling for pet-friendly hotels or leaving your companions behind.

13. Can we travel to any state in India?

Yes. Caravan IT’s caravan comes with an All-India tourist permit, which means you can travel across all state borders without needing separate state-level permits for each crossing. Whether your route takes you through Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, or beyond, the permit is covered.

14. What is included in the per kilometre plan and what is extra?

The per kilometre plan at Rs. 80 per km includes fuel, driver charges, toll taxes, and state taxes — everything bundled into one number. What is not included is your personal groceries, any campsite fees you choose to pay, and generator usage at off-grid locations which is charged separately at a nominal hourly rate.

15. How far in advance should I book?

For regular dates, booking 7 to 10 days in advance is recommended. For peak season dates from October to March and for long weekends and school holidays, booking 3 to 4 weeks ahead is strongly advised. Caravan availability is limited and the best dates fill up quickly during popular travel periods.

16. What happens if the caravan breaks down?

Caravan IT provides 24/7 roadside support throughout your trip. In the event of a mechanical issue, the team coordinates assistance from the nearest service point. Because you always have a professional driver with you, you are never alone in handling any vehicle situation on the road.

17. Can I change my route or itinerary after booking?

Yes. Caravan travel is flexible by design. You can adjust your route, change your stops, and modify your pace as you go — without penalty. The driver is experienced in route changes and the team is available to help plan any adjustments. The only constraint is that the minimum daily kilometre charge applies regardless of actual distance covered.

18. Is there a cancellation policy?

Yes. Cancellations made within the specified timeline before the trip date are eligible for a full refund of the booking amount. The security deposit of Rs. 20,000 is refundable after the trip following a vehicle inspection. For specific cancellation timeline details, the Caravan IT team will share the policy at the time of booking confirmation.

19. What should I pack for a caravan trip?

Pack personal clothing, toiletries, and any personal medications. Bring groceries and snacks for the journey — the kitchen is fully stocked with equipment but ingredients are on you. Carry a first aid kit with essentials. For hill station or winter trips, pack warm layers. Leave behind excessive luggage — the caravan has storage, but compact packing makes the interior more comfortable. You do not need to bring bedding, towels, or kitchen equipment — all of this is provided.

20. Is a caravan trip worth it for a first-time renter?

Absolutely. The most common thing first-time caravan renters say after their trip is that they wish they had done it sooner. The privacy, the flexibility, the comfort of your own space on the road, the food cooked in your own kitchen, and the freedom to stop wherever you want create a quality of travel experience that is genuinely different from anything else available in India today.

Start with a 2 or 3 day trip to a destination you already love — Rishikesh, Agra, Jaipur, or a hill station near Delhi. Experience the caravan for the first time in a familiar territory. By day two, you will already be planning the next one.
